Senior Graphic Designer

JOB SUMMARY: The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit organization that works to save America’s historic places, seeks an exceptionally talented, creative, and organized designer that will work with the senior creative director to develop a wide variety of marketing and brand materials in a creative, fast-paced, high-energy environment.

The ideal candidate has proven experience demonstrating the use of sophisticated design, typography, photography, and illustration. You must be a multi-tasker who can easily design and layout engaging campaign materials but can also craft a digital piece with punch. We are looking for someone who can turn out designs quickly and has the ability to dissect content across both print and digital using creative solutions in a collaborative environment. This is a key role for a design thinker with a passion for storytelling, usability, and an eye for visual consistency.

This is a hybrid/DC position with the majority of work being completed remotely. D.C. area-based candidates are preferred.

DUTIES

  • Executes and implements entire process of all projects assigned by Creative Director, from initial project request and meeting to final design production. Concepts and design solutions must be produced at a high level of competence and creativity. Process includes the following: Meetings with Creative Director and project manager as necessary; Design concepts, 1–3 for presentation; Upon approval, executes creative process including multiple sets of revisions; Performs and oversees print production if necessary; Evaluates end product, suggesting improvements for next year; Archives files; Tracks hours.
  • Manages creative assets and production of digital communications including email; social shareables, social media platforms, etc. Meets directly with internal staff and recommends design strategies. Manages entire creative process upon approval of strategy by the Creative Director. Works with Social Media and Digital Engagement & Acquisition staff to establish and implement new programs and new campaigns. Works closely with the Creative Director to ensure cohesive branding for program or general National Trust visual brand. Establishes schedules and sets up in project management system for implementation. Manages project logistics.
  • Oversees Digital Asset Management System and serves as vendor contact, managing competitive bid process. Provides training and set up for all staff. Manages uploads of assets and organizes all in a manner that makes all efficient and easily searchable using metadata and a centralized system that can be deployed on desktop and mobile. Provides training and ongoing support for learning opportunities and best-case scenarios that allow the greatest work efficiency and collaboration across the organization.
  • Manages the work of outside designers for individual projects, from initial request to final product as assigned by the Creative Director. This includes solicitation of appropriate designers, setting contract or price, and ensuring production schedules are executed on time and on budget.
  • Ensures adherence to brand identity guidelines, templates, logos and stationery system. Responsible for maintaining and updating files and communications on staff intranet and serves as vendor contact. Sets and maintains stationery budgets annually and recommends print contracts.
  • Implements outreach and training of staff to emphasize importance of brand materials and the usage of electronic templates on a regular basis. Responsible for all-staff communications regarding branding materials.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 5 years of professional experience, including experience with design and production of print and online communications, and marketing materials in a service-oriented association or design firm setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with a Mac environment: Adobe Creative Cloud Suite—InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop applications; Microsoft Office—Word and PowerPoint; project management software such as Monday.com. Video animation capabilities a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience managing digital and print production processes—some proficiency with HTML.
  • Proven ability to present ideas clearly through verbal communication in a client-designer relationship. Experience successfully managing internal stakeholders and relationships. Public contact and ability to work successfully in close proximity to others required.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across divisions to implement processes and achieve results.
  • Experience helping to ensure that materials reflect an organization’s brand identity, diversity, and outreach goals.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization.
  • Advanced project-management skills, including project budgeting and planning. Ability to achieve results with little supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and respond to a high volume of ongoing requests in a timely fashion.
  • Proven ability to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing technology and communications best practices.
  • Effective presentation skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and skill set essential.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic remote and hybrid work environment. Able to handle frequently changing and/or unscheduled tasks with accuracy.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design/communications design or related field, or comparable combination of training and experience.

PAY & BENEFITS

This is a full-time, exempt level position, eligible for full benefits, including health, dental and life insurance, retirement benefits, and 3+ weeks of vacation, plus sick time and holidays.
Hiring Range: $68,500 - $80,000 per year
