PROJECT SUMMARY
The AACHAF Mapping Project intern will provide support to the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, which provides grants to Black historic sites and organizations to preserve, recognize and celebrate African American historic and cultural sites nationwide. The intern will have the opportunity to support AACHAF Preservation team staff by assisting with research as a part of AACHAF’s National Mapping Project.
National Trust internships are temporary experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.
For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $4,000 to help offset expenses. The period of the internship will last from June 2 – July 25 for approximately 28 hours per week.
DUTIES
- Assist in synthesizing research and data related to the AACHAF Mapping Project.
- Analyze and distill data related to the Preserving Black Churches component of the project.
- Complete a geospatial data analysis to leverage the cleaned and mapped data to gain deeper understanding of the communities surrounding grantee sites.
- Work with the Senior Manager, Special Projects to maintain clear documentation for processes and updates.
- Collaborate with Senior GIS Specialist to learn best practices in mapping and management of spatial data.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE TO THE INTERN
The intern will gain experience under the mentorship of respected preservation and architecture professionals, in an educational setting at one of the nation’s leading non-profit advocacy organizations. The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in educational programming offered via the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s organization-wide internship program. Students may also be eligible for college or graduate school academic credit at the discretion of their institution.
Specifically, the intern will gain knowledge in the following areas:
• Research & documentation of historic places using primary and secondary sources.
• Themes central to preserving African American historic places.
• Using data management and GIS practice for historic preservation and planning.
• Secretary of Interior Standands for Historic Preservation.
At the end of the project, the intern will have produced a comprehensive database or StoryMap of Preserving Black Churches data along with documentation to outline how they mapped and verified the data to create a pilot for mapping future Action Fund datasets, which can be added to their professional portfolio in support of their future career pursuits.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Some experience in research and documentation of historic places, with preferred interest in/familiarity with African American history and GIS/digital mapping.
- Basic analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Basic project-organization skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse colleagues; connections to or experience helping to engage culturally diverse audiences and partners a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud products , including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.
- Ability work effectively in a remote environment, maintaining productivity and communications to meet deadlines and goals, is required.
- Bachelor’s level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required; current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred. Studies or demonstrated interest in African American history, historic preservation, architecture, and/or urban planning preferred.
