JOB SUMMARY

The Research and Development (RAD) department is a small but growing team of the Preservation Division of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The department is responsible for producing innovative research, and initiatives in support of the strategic priorities of the National Trust, such as the America’s Chinatowns program. We are experts in mapping and place-based GIS analysis to support internal priorities and preservation advocacy, and we provide ongoing thought leadership around investing in preservation’s future.

The GIS Analyst position is a two-year term-position that will work as part of the Research and Development department, led by the Senior Director of Research and Development, and will report directly to the Senior GIS Project Manager. This position will provide day-to-day project support related to the RAD department’s work in expanding the National Trust’s GIS technology and infrastructure as well as advancing research and analytical objectives on key programmatic initiatives, including the Preserve Route 66 GIS and Crowdsourcing initiative, America’s Chinatowns, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund mapping projects and more. The role will occasionally support broader National Trust initiatives involved in preservation policy advocacy and climate action work.

The GIS Analyst’s primary role over the two-year period will be to contribute to the increased use of GIS technology across the National Trust. To this end, the GIS Analyst will perform a variety of duties related to GIS data creation and management, online and static map production, and spatial analysis to support specific programmatic projects and historic preservation advocacy and practice across the county.

The GIS Analyst will initially focus their efforts in two areas: 1) populate a robust GIS database of historic sites and stories from Historic Route 66 based on existing data and information collected through the National Trust’s Share Your Route 66 Story crowdsourced data collection efforts; and 2) establish core organizational geospatial data and collaborate across the Trust to support the creation of a user-friendly map tool to view the data. As these projects progress, the GIS Analyst should expect to conduct spatial analysis to communicate trends, opportunities, and impact and support additional GIS needs across the organization.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working both alone and in teams and be able to coordinate with colleagues across the organization. The candidate should be a self-starter who approaches the job with a problem-solving mindset and interest in exploring the intricacies of applying GIS to history and culture.
