JOB SUMMARY

The Vice President of Data Strategy & Management position will serve as an essential part of the National Trust in building a “Data First” strategy to integrate into initiatives across all aspects of the organization, both internally and externally facing. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Vice President will be primarily responsible for optimizing the use of data to facilitate data-driven decision making and innovation throughout the Trust. Their expertise will guide the organization’s evolution of data collection methods, methodologies, and technologies, and use of data analytics. Working closely with leaders across the organization, the Vice President will drive a collaborative approach to data analysis and will help to develop a culture that uses data to inform decisions, identify trends, and support the organization’s evolving performance management efforts.

As data and analysis will be key to informing and effectively developing strategies to bring operational efficiencies, expand the Trust’s reach and optimize our preservation efforts, the long-term goal will be to help simplify, accelerate, integrate, and improve the quality of all things data across the organization.

Successful candidates will be able to articulate the value they will bring to the Trust and how their experience can activate the overall vision of the “Data First” strategy. They will be adept at change management, building confidence in others, and will have a shared sense of open collaboration. They must consciously and strategically balance possibilities with reality, which may involve a phased implementation of ideas and initiatives. The successful candidate will have a track record of building a network of champions for effective use of data, both in and outside the organization.

DUTIES

Data Strategy

  • Co-lead the Data & Technology Governance Team, which is responsible for creating and implementing enterprise-wide guidelines and decision-making processes regarding the acquisition and use of data and technology.
  • Develop and execute the data strategy for the Trust, focusing on data needs specific to institutional priorities and business units (i.e. Operations, Preservation, Development, Marketing, Historic Sites, etc.).
  • Oversee the collection, integration, and quality assurance of diverse data sources, including proprietary data sets, third party data, research data, and alternative data.
  • Collaborate with division leads and data-driven roles to identify opportunities (through artificial intelligence and other means) and drive innovation in historic preservation.
  • Develop frameworks and methodologies for integrating and normalizing diverse data sets, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define data governance policies, data standards, and data architecture frameworks.

Data Selection and Sourcing

  • Identify and evaluate a wide range of traditional and non-traditional data sources.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the data landscape, staying informed about emerging data technologies, tools, and platforms while assessing their potential impact on data management and analytics capabilities.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external data providers to ensure data sourcing aligns to our strategy.
  • Collaborate with Technology colleagues to design and optimize data architectures, data pipelines, and data warehouses to support asset management needs.

Data Initiative Program Management

  • Lead and manage data-driven initiatives and projects, including implementing new organization-wide software, by planning, executing, monitoring, and evaluating.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define project goals, deliverables, timelines, and resource requirements.
  • Monitor project progress, manage risks, and communicate updates to key stakeholders, ensuring successful and timely project delivery.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Technology and data professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and technical expertise.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional divisions, including development, marketing, operations, preservation, historic sites, etc., to ensure data needs are met and aligned with business objectives.
  • Evaluate, recommend and implement data technology solutions to support data cataloging, data integration, data governance, and data analytics.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 15 years of experience, including at least 12 years in progressively responsible senior data and data management roles.
  • Highly developed research and analysis skills with experience in a similar role within the nonprofit industry.
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent experience related to systems design, data analytics, and enterprise-wide collaboration.
  • Solid understanding of nonprofit-related data sets, such as those used in development (i.e direct marketing, fundraising, & constituent management), marketing, visitor engagement, etc.
  • Strong expertise and knowledge in data management, data quality, data governance, and data architecture principles.
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex data insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Independent and strategic problem solver; accountable for and skilled in exercising sound judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with proven ability to collaborate across divisions to implement processes and achieve results. Track record of building and maintaining productive relationships with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging culturally diverse colleagues and stakeholders. Bilingual language skills a plus. Demonstrated success engaging historically underrepresented communities, constituents, and partners a plus. Ties to culturally diverse affinity groups, professional organizations, or related associations are a plus.
  • Validated attention to detail as well as effective time management abilities.
  • Passion for continuous learning and staying ahead of the curve in the data analytics field.
  • Familiarity with analytic and visualization technologies a plus (e.g. Tableau, Power BI, etc.).
  • Familiarity with research related to historic preservation, climate change, the built environment, and community impact highly desired.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Some travel required.
PAY & BENEFITS
This is a full-time, exempt level position, eligible for full benefits, including health, dental and life insurance, retirement benefits, and 3+ weeks of vacation, plus sick time and holidays.
Hiring Range: $180,000 - 200,000 per year
