Director, HOPE Crew

JOB SUMMARY  

The HOPE Crew Director plays a key leadership role in one of the Trustís most dynamic new programs. HOPE Crew works to empower a diverse new generation of preservationists through Hands-On Preservation Experiences at historic properties across the country. The role combines direct management of projects, staff and external partnerships with the development and growth of the overall HOPE Crew program. The role is an important part of the National Trustís Field Service work, is integral to the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and works to help the organization effectively engage with a larger, broader and more culturally diverse audience. 

DUTIES 

Program Direction

  • Grow HOPE Crew model to provide diverse youth with preservation trades experiences at historic sites across the country, managing projects and program staff.
  • Based on the HOPE Crew business plan, evaluate opportunities to expand the HOPE Crew model to include a workforce training component in one or more cities.
  • Identify and evaluate the risks and take appropriate action to mitigate risk(s).
  • Serve as the primary brand ambassador and spokesperson for the program at events, conferences, donor meetings and with the media.
  • With internal and external partners, work to raise funds to support the program and sustainably grow its scope and scale.
  • Develop a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of the program and to identify areas for improvement.
  • Cultivate and recruit a network of supporters, preservation experts and craftspeople to advise on and assist with the program.
  • Hire additional staff as funding allows to implement program design and grow the HOPE Crew program scale and impact.
  • Ensure program activities comply with National Trust policies and procedures.

Project Management

  • Train, manage and direct staff in identification, coordination, budgeting, management, and evaluation of projects according to National Trust policies and procedures and the Secretary of Interiorís Standards for Rehabilitation.
  • Collaborate with National Trust Partners and others to identify preservation projects and maintain a project prospect list.
  • Train and oversee staff in the development of project scopes and budgets, definition of project roles and resource requirements, recruitment and management of craft experts and communication with all stakeholders.
  • Manage contracts with youth corps, property owners, and trades experts. 

Partner Management

  • Explore and, where appropriate, develop relationships with other potential participants in the program, including but not limited to African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund grant applicants, HBCUs, public land agencies, and Historic Hotels of America and others as appropriate.
  • Develop, cultivate, and help direct relationships with preservation trades associations, guilds, youth serving organizations, etc.

Other

  • Manage internal team of staff providing support for HOPE Crew
  • Work with Marketing on an annual HOPE Crew communications plan.
  • Proactively communicate with internal stakeholders on HOPE Crew.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • At least 10 years of professional level experience in construction management, preservation trades or a related field.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse youth and in diverse communities with demonstrated success in engaging diverse colleagues and stakeholders. Memberships or connections within culturally diverse professional, social or community affinity groups a plus.
  • Experience with budgeting, staffing, supervising professionals and leading teams to generate high quality results.
  • Experience in fundraising, including donor outreach and preparing proposals.
  • Familiarity with the Secretary of the Interiorís Standards for Rehabilitation.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing large, cross-functional projects and teams, preferably within a national level non-profit setting.
  • Experience in managing workforce development training programs.
  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Excellent attention to detail.
  • Advanced project-management, team-management and client-management skills. Ability to achieve results with limited supervision.
  • Experience coaching, teaching, or leading staff, as well as successfully managing key internal and external stakeholders and relationships.
  • Experience as a dynamic public speaker and program spokesperson with ability to articulate the programís mission to a wide range of audiences.
  • Excellent writing, spelling, grammar, and proofreading skills, as well as strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently and respond to a high volume of ongoing requests in a timely fashion. Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment. Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions required. Able to handle frequently changing and/or unscheduled tasks with accuracy.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and skill set a plus.
  • Experience recruiting, supervising and retaining a well-qualified, culturally diverse staff.
  • Proven ability to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing technology and communications best practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required. Familiarity with other software, including databases, a plus.
  • Masterís degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Bi-lingual language skills (especially English/Spanish) a plus.
  • Frequent travel required.
